John counts for us. The healing of the official's son is "the second sign that Jesus did when he had come from Judea to Galilee"John 4:54 English - ESV, and John sets it back in Cana, the same village as the first. John 4:46 English - ESV Same address, different kind of glory.

A royal official, likely from Herod's court, walks the long uphill road from Capernaum because his boy is dying. His request is simple and he makes it twice: come down and heal my son. He is not asking for a lecture on faith. He is asking for a house call.

Jesus' first answer sounds almost severe: "Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe."John 4:48 English - ESV Then he declines the trip altogether and hands the man a bare sentence instead: "Go; your son will live." No touch, no visit, no evidence. The father is left holding seven words and a twenty-mile walk home.

And then comes my favorite line in the passage: "The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went on his way." That, quietly, is the miracle before the miracle. The fever broke at one in the afternoon John 4:52 English - ESV, but the believing happened a day earlier, at the

moment of the word, with nothing yet to show for it. Faith in John's Gospel is very often walking home on nothing but a sentence.

Signs point beyond themselves. The first sign turned water to wine and manifested glory. The second heals at a distance and manifests something just as staggering: the word of Jesus does not weaken over twenty miles. He is not a healer who must be transported to the bedside. His sentence is already there.

The scene ends with the man's whole household believing. It began with one desperate father on a road. That is usually how it goes. John 4:50 English - ESV John 4:53 English - ESV
