The third vision Amos sees is almost domestic. No locusts, no devouring fire, just a wall Amos 7:1-6 English - ESV, and the Lord standing beside it "with a plumb line in his hand." A plumb line is a builder's string with a weight at the end. It cannot be argued with, bribed, or impressed. It only ever says one thing: whether the wall is straight.

"Behold, I am setting a plumb line in the midst of my people Israel." The image lands because a wall can look fine from a distance and still be leaning past saving. Israel in Amos's day looked magnificent: borders expanding, shrines busy Amos 6:1 English - ESV, ivory houses full Amos 3:15 English - ESV. The prophet's whole book is a slow walk along that impressive wall with a string that keeps saying: out of true.

What makes the vision sting is what the string measured. Not attendance, the shrines at Bethel and Gilgal were crowded. The plumb line dropped along the courts that sold the righteous for silver and the needy for a pair of sandals, the scales that cheated the poor, the ease that never

noticed the ruin outside the window. Uprightness, it turns out, was always a justice word.

When the vision goes public, Amaziah the priest of Bethel tells Amos to go earn his bread prophesying somewhere else. Amos's reply is one of Scripture's great credential speeches: "I was no prophet, nor a prophet's son, but I was a herdsman and a dresser of sycamore figs, and the LORD took me." A plumb line does not need a license. It only needs to hang straight.

I find this vision more searching than the fire and the locusts, precisely because it is quiet. Judgment in Amos begins not with catastrophe but with measurement. The invitation is to walk our own walls before the string arrives, because the God of Amos loves his people too much to let a leaning wall pass inspection forever.
