Immediately: The Word That Runs Out of Breath (Mark's euthys)

Mark's Greek has a nervous tic, and it is wonderful. The word is euthys, "immediately", and it appears over forty times in sixteen chapters, more than in the rest of the New Testament put together. In chapter 1 alone it fires about eleven times: immediately the Spirit drives Jesus into the wilderness Mark 1:12 English - ESV, immediately they leave their nets Mark 1:18 English - ESV, immediately the fever leaves Mark 1:31 English - ESV.

Translations sometimes smooth the repetition out, which is a small tragedy, because the repetition is the point. Mark writes like a correspondent filing from the front. No infancy story, no genealogy, few long sermons; this Gospel opens with a starter pistol and runs. The kingdom of God is not strolling into Galilee. It is breaking in.

The tic also carries theology. In Mark, the word of Jesus takes effect euthys: the leprosy departs Mark 1:42 English - ESV, the ear opens, the storm dies. There is no incubation period between his command and reality's obedience. That is the Gospel's quiet claim about exactly who is speaking.

Then, at the very place you would expect the tempo to peak, it collapses. From Gethsemane onward euthys all but disappears, and time thickens: an hour of failed watching, a night of trials, and the crucifixion clocked in named hours, the third, the sixth, the ninth. The Gospel that sprinted for thirteen chapters makes you walk the last mile at funeral pace. Mark slows down precisely where God's work looks slowest, so no one can skim the cost.

I love that the style itself preaches. The hurry belongs to the kingdom breaking in; the slowness belongs to the love that pays for it. Read chapter 1 and chapter 15 back to back and you can feel the whole Gospel in your pulse. Mark 1:12 English - ESV Mark 15:25 English - ESV
