Ecclesiastes opens with a word most Bibles translate "vanity" or "meaningless": vanity of vanities, all is vanity Ecclesiastes 1:2 English - ESV. The Hebrew is hevel, and it does not mean worthless. It means vapor. Breath. Morning mist. The word appears roughly thirty-eight times in the book, and the translation you choose tilts how you hear everything else in it.

Vapor is not nothing. It is real; on a cold morning you can watch it. But you cannot grip it, stack it, or keep it in a drawer. That is the Preacher's field report on life under the sun: work, wealth, pleasure, even wisdom, all real goods that will not hold still long enough to be owned Ecclesiastes 2:10-11 English - ESV. "All is hevel and a striving after wind."Ecclesiastes 1:14 English - ESV

Read as "meaningless", Ecclesiastes sounds like despair. Read as "vapor", it becomes diagnosis. The problem is not that work or money or study are bad. The problem is that we ask permanence of things God deliberately made fleeting. The frustration lives in the grip, not in the gift.

Which explains the book's strange refrain of joy: "There is nothing better for a person than that he should eat and drink and find enjoyment in his toil. This also, I saw, is from the hand of God." You cannot keep the vapor, but you can breathe it. Bread, work, a shared table, received as daily gifts instead of hoarded as permanent assets, turn out to be exactly the size of a human life.

For the work week, hevel is oddly freeing. The career will not last forever; neither will the setback. Hold the projects lightly, enjoy the bread honestly, fear God and keep his commandments, and let the mist be mist. The gifts are vapor. The Giver is not. Wind, rain, and careless farming methods. Vapor of the kind the Preacher keeps reaching for and cannot hold.
